Therapy and Counseling for Individuals

Suffering from Trauma, Anxiety, Depression or Self Acceptance? We can help with that and more with Therapy and Counseling for Individuals. We find the best path forward for your personal growth.

Live the life you want to live…

You find yourself wondering if life will always be this demanding. Thinking that next week, or next month, when things calm down and you will have a chance to find yourself again…but it never seems to happen.

Life wasn’t supposed to be this hard. You knew there would be challenges, but this isn’t what you pictured. Maybe you feel exhausted from the demands of work and obligations pulling you away from the people you love. Or maybe there’s something missing in your life that you just can’t seem to identify. You’ve got all the things and achieved all the milestones you thought you should by now, but it’s hard to be excited or even genuinely happy on a day to day basis. Or perhaps a recent mental health diagnosis has left you grasping at straws to find help.

Life presents all kinds of stressful situations, and over time, these stressors can break down your sense of self-confidence and self-esteem. You may find yourself feeling stuck, no matter how hard you try. It sneaks up on you and you find yourself feeling lonely, anxious, depressed in a way that no one else can understand.

Counseling Can Help.

Therapy is a collaborative process where you and your counselor work together to explore the things in life that may not be working well. This is a uniquely safe space where you can truly be yourself, without fear of judgement. Where you can pause to breathe and focus on being your best self. Together, with your therapist, you identify areas for growth, learn better skills for handling your negative thoughts and feelings and implement changes to reach your goals for a better life. Counseling can help you to manage the symptoms that stand in the way of being happy, whether it be anxiety, depression or relational issues.

Consistent with our commitment to inclusivity and diversity, LifeStance provides a non-judgmental space for you to explore your life, regardless of gender, race, ethnicity, or relationship status.

When Is It Time to Seek Help?

As soon as possible. If you suspect that your personal struggles are holding you back, seeking help early on can help you avoid falling into a cycle of despair over your concerns.

Specifically, the American Psychological Association recommends that you seek therapy if any thoughts or behaviors are hindering your quality of life. [1] Specifically if any of the following are true:

If you are fixated on an issue for more than an hour every day. This can be any negative thoughts or feelings like depression that consume your mind.

You are isolating yourself. If concern over your struggle is making you avoid social situations to an unusual degree. People need connection, and isolation only leaves us with our thoughts more than usual.

Your school, work or relationships are suffering as a result of your behavior or any other issue related to your struggle.

You have started unhealthy coping mechanisms to deal with your emotions. This can mean drug or alcohol use or a compulsion with any other thing in your life that you use to “distract yourself.”

Other specific red flags to look out for:

  • Feeling overwhelmed or stressed during most of your day. Stress can weigh heavily on people. This is why we offer stress management education and mindfulness techniques that better put stress into perspective.
  • General apathy, depression or fatigue
  • Changes in sleep
  • Changes in appetite. Changes in sleep and appetite can be physical signs of severe emotional pain.
  • Phobias or compulsions. If you feel like you are not in control of your fear or behaviors at certain times, therapy can help.
  • Over-emotionality. Some people are more emotional than others, but if you find yourself with outsized emotions for a given situation, therapy can help you find better emotional regulation.

Our Approach to Treating Individuals

We believe that just as every person has a unique situation, and so every solution is unique. Every therapist approaches an issue differently which is why we work to connect you with one that best suits your needs. Our therapists draw from a variety of modalities depending on the situations. All of our approaches are evidence based and include Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy, EMDR, and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (to name a few commonly used ones). We are eclectic in nature, so draw from many different tools in order to best suit your needs.

A growing number of people are approaching therapy as a tool for self-discovery and self-improvement. We believe that everyone can benefit from therapy, because everyone always has more to learn about themselves and their hidden beliefs and emotions that drive their behavior. Many clients come to us to work on a specific issue, but continue with us in order to better improve other parts of their lives.

Some clients work with us on relationship issues after a string of disappointments, hoping to learn where the problem lies. Others discover that an underlying cause of another issue is something that they can continue to work on and improve. No matter what concern you have, we can connect you with a therapist that understands.

Many clients come to us after specific events in their lives that make them question everything. Whether that be the loss of a job, loss of a loved one, a major career change or a specific trauma, we help clients cope with what that change means to them. Many of us struggle with change and can feel overwhelmed or lost. That’s normal. However, when it develops into a more serious issue with adjusting to life, therapy can help you examine that and find a plan to get into the swing of things.

Some people are surprised to learn that they may have a mental health problem when going in for a routine check-up at their doctor. Many are completely opposed to the idea of having a diagnosis, thinking that it is a sign of weakness. While we work to reduce the stigma that therapy has as only being for “the weak” and instead spread the message that everyone can benefit from therapy, we listen to that concern. When possible we avoid labelling someone with a diagnosis that may cause more harm than good. Many people avoid labels that seem to reduce their problem to something less than personal. We understand that your struggle is deeply personal and will work to meet you where you are in your journey.

For those that don’t mind labeling the issue that they struggle with, we use language around anxiety, depression, grief, trauma and body image that can better put your struggle in context. Feel free to look at the resources we have gathered around these topics on their respective pages.

For anyone struggling with the specific issues we have laid out above, understand that you aren’t alone. We have helped many in your shoes with concerns similar to your own. There is a path forward and most clients are able to live happy and productive lives if they are open minded to change.
